Humans have been weaving and using baskets for over 10,000 years. Different cultures have developed many different techniques based on local needs and available plant materials. Today, the weaver's skill and craft is under threat from the mass production of cheap and predominately plastic containers.
Malawian Handwoven Baskets by People of the Sun
All of the baskets in this range are handwoven by local artisans in villages near Blantyre, Malawi from mulaza palm leaves. Each basket is made with tons of love by Mango Club, set up with the assistance of People of the Sun in 2012. The Club now has about 150 artisan members. Following high-profile collaborations with internationally-known designers, such as Ineke Hans, Rentaro Nishimura and Donna Wilson their products are sought-after worldwide.
Handwoven Basketware from North East Tanzania by Womencraft
All Womencraft products are intricately woven by hand following traditional weaving techniques which have been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years. The weaving technique is very labour intensive so that even smaller products take several days to weave. Artisans use molds and are supervised by lead-weavers to ensure all products meet WomenCraft's high quality standards.
Handwoven Baskets from Western Senegal by Artisanne
All of the Artisanne baskets are woven from sustainable ndiorokh grasses intertwined with strips of repurposed plastic traditionally used for making prayer mats. They are skillfully handwoven in remote villages near Thiès in Senegal.
